What brings meaning to my life? Donuts. Fashion magazines. Costume jewelry. Playing “Cards Against Humanity.” Pretentious overpriced cocktails with a lot of silly crap in them. Fooling around on Facebook. Looking at cute cat videos on the Internet, over and over and over again. TiVoing the Olympics and watching the really obscure sports we’ve never heard of. Coming up with a sexy, gorgeous, wildly inappropriate outfit to wear to the Dyke March. Padron peppers sautéed in hot olive oil until they blister, then sprinkled with coarse sea salt. Sitting on the sofa watching Project Runway and letting cats crawl all over us. The never-ending search for a perfect cup of decaf coffee. It is true that there’s far too much theistic and religious rhetoric espoused in politics, especially nationally and amongst States’ legislative bodies. Perhaps a renewed sense of how important human reason is, and the ability to think rationally and ethically actually is in the course of human lives, could help further a shift in political rhetoric away from the ever-increasing divisiveness amongst thinking humans. Who knows? A new-found expression of American Enlightenment would indeed be refreshing, wouldn’t it? By That’s Dunedin, Florida City Commissioner Ron Barnette in an interview with HNN.

Ladies and gentlemen, as the council gathers here to make laws affecting the people of Wilmington, I ask you to lift your heads, to open your eyes, and open your hearts. Our most serious duty is to look to the community we share, the examples we make, and the legacies we leave. That should be our greatest, most courageous, and noble intention. Let this be our most constant success. Thank you. By That’s how a humanist makes an invocation at a city council meeting. No god necessary.

The most obvious and effective lesson atheists are learning from gays (including all LGBTs) is to come out of the closet. Attitudes toward gays changed rapidly when people learned that their friends, neighbors, and even family members were gay. Attitudes about atheists are slowly changing as atheists are slowly coming out. By AHA board member Herb Silverman lays out what atheists can learn from the gay rights movement in this Washington Post piece.

Dr. Reginald J. Exton, a NASA scientist for five decades, shares clearly and succinctly the evidence that points to the human origin of religions in Make the Break (If You Can), the latest title from Humanist Press. To this end, Exton has gathered a representative list of events, scientific observations, and religious developments that lead the reader to the eventual realization that there is voluminous evidence that humanity itself created gods and religions to shield itself from the unknown.

“My sincere hope is that the book will help to relieve people of their historical guilt and clarify the individual rights and responsibilities of all human beings,” Exton said. “These hopes are particularly meaningful at the beginning of the twenty-first century as two major religions again conduct crusades against one another, and the political arm of religion in the U.S. strengthens itself to secure by ‘democratic’ means what it cannot obtain by argument.”

Keep on praying – it doesn’t work, but it’s a good part of a getting-to-sleep routine if you’ve got insomnia. By

The BBC received so many complaints about this and other jokes Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean, made during Comic Relief that they have taken video of the routine down.

The network estimates that a quarter of the 2,200 complaints received about Atkinson’s sketch were focused on “religious offense.” That’s 550 people out of a peak audience of 12.2 million. Or 0.004508196721311475 percent of viewers.
